David Johnston is a Professor of Economics at the Centre for Health Economics, Monash Business School, Monash University. His research interests span health economics, labor economics, and applied microeconometrics, with a particular focus on the economics of mental health and wellbeing, resilience, and the impacts of environmental factors. David has authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications and led multiple large research projects. Current and recent projects are focussed on the economic costs and consequences of child maltreatment, socioeconomic inequity in mental healthcare, the mental health impacts of economic insecurity, revitalisation of informal settlements in Indonesia and Fiji, and community resilience following natural disasters.

Hotter nights are disrupting sleep and hurting economic decisions
Research in Indonesia shows that elevated night-time temperatures disturb sleep, hinder cognitive performance and increase impatience and irrational behaviour. These effects disproportionately impact vulnerable populations.
